When it comes to scented candles, fragrance possibilities can be endless. There are so many scent types to choose from – floral, spice, warm – it can be overwhelming. But, understanding the pros and cons of oils, percentage of oil and fragrance types can be extremely helpful when shopping around.
Essential Oils vs. Fragrance Oils
Natural, essential oils are always the best choice. Most are created by extracting from actual flowers, plants, and herbs. Essential oils are typically 100% pure. Blending essential oils will allow for experimenting with complex scents, like using lavender, chamomile, or bergamot as a base.
Essential oils having limiting options, when it comes to nature – vanilla is one that comes to mind. Typically, a more expensive option, essential oils have long-lasting, aromatherapeutic benefits.
Fragrance oils are created with natural ingredients, like essential oils and extracts, and a mix of aromatic chemicals. There are no limiting properties to fragrance oils – as they thrive off complexity with a variety of notes. The process of enhancing fragrance oils to be stronger vs. lighter is a fun way to play with the amounts.
A couple things to keep in mind is that fragrance oils are synthetic, which can accelerate color change in candle wax and expire quicker than essential oils.

Living in South Florida for over 15 years, I wanted to create a fragrance that is reminiscent of the tropics, beach, sun, and fun and this is how Sea & Sand was developed.
Melanin Smooth is dark, sexy, and smooth. This fragrance will set the mood for a relaxing night cap. Infused with cedarwood, patchouli, cypress, geranium, and mint essential oil. Melanin Smooth came about through conversations with my fiancé. He wanted me to develop a collection that was sultry, musky, and sexy. Something with a more masculine feel. I researched all the scent combinations with geared towards those three descriptions (sultry, musky, and sexy) and came up 4 amazing fragrance that included Melanin Smooth. Melanin Smooth reminds me of a fragrance that a Idris Elba or Matthew McConaughey would wear, just sexy, smooth, handsome.
Faith is a sweet, yet salty oceanic accord combined with an undercurrent of amber and vanilla. Infused cardamom seed and cloverleaf essential oil. Faith is a fragrance that has been around since I started my business in 2017. This fragrance was developed from my need in wanting a fragrance that described how I was jumping out on faith to start my business. I wanted a fragrance that would give my customers a feeling of comfort, trust, and confidence. This fragrance is light, airy, and clean.
